Branch Meeting Wednesday 18^th.

Margaret Hardiman.

All must be sorry to hear that Margaret passed away in Poole Hospital on New Years Day.

The funeral took place on Thursday 12^th January at Poole Crematorium. Margaret regularly attended both branch and group events over many years with Husband Arthur. Our message of sympathy goes to him, Sister Dorothy, John and to all of the family at this sad time.

WELFARE

Jack Francis has had a slight stroke. The good news is that he is at home and recovering well.

Best wishes go to him and any Member or Lady who maybe unwell at this time.

The next Gurkha Lunch takes place next Tuesday, 24^th January. The February Lunch takes place at Ferndown R.B.L. Club on Tuesday the 7^th. Lists on table tonight.

This is an increase over last year, but it is the first increase since 2001.

Albert Hicks Memorial Award 2011.

In July Sapper Luke Walton was presented with this award and has now chosen as his prize a Bronze statuette entitled “Searcher”. (Pictured right) It stands 230 mm high and 230 mm wide. The subject is very apt as Luke is an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) specialist.

The A.G.M. will be held on Wednesday 21^st March.

At this Meeting the election of officers will take place, nominations are required.

Mr Thomas McArthur, and Ex/Standard bearer of the Edinburgh Branch sends his good wishes to all at the Branch, with a special word to Hazel Aldridge on her sad loss of Husband Peter. Thomas knew Peter, and had met him on more than one occasion when attending weekends at Ripon. He left this message on our Branch Web Site, where he also read about Peter.

R.E.A. Chilwell, Weekend 2012.

This will take place on 11^th until 13^th May,at Chetwynd Barracks, Nottingham. Events planned include: A parade through the Town of Beeston to exercise the Freedom granted to 170 Engr. Group, plus Standard Bearers Competition. The numbers attending will be restricted to 250. Accommodation In Chilwell Station for Friday and Saturday at Nil Cost. Meals : Breakfast £2.25, Lunch £2.75, Dinner £3.25 (Pay as you Dine.)

MORGAN BENJAMIN. It is with sadness we announce the passing of Morgan on Sunday 27^th November, in Poole Hospital after a fall, at the magnificent age of 102. The Funeral took place on Friday December 9^th at Bournemouth Crematorium. 2 Members and 1Lady were present. also Bert Martin paraded our Standard. No real information is at hand except his service number was 1896576 and that he served in Normandy in 1944. He moved to Bournemouth

5 years ago to be with his family. Morgan joined the branch only a few years ago and attended two branch Annual Lunches. He was born in Tonypandy, Rhonda, South Wales, and at the age of 12 worked down the pit. Our message of sympathy goes to Morgan’s family at this time.

ENTERTAINMENT

Tonight is Christmas Party Night when we will start Christmas early in the company of Wimborne Musical Theatre, who will entertain us with a selection of Christmas Songs,

Afterwards there will be a special supper, including a beautiful Xmas Cake made by Peggy.

Many thanks go to our catering Ladies who do tremendous work all year round.

At our Meeting in January we will welcome Mr. Manton who will tell us all about the

Outing to Poppy Factory.

39 Members, Ladies and friends travelled to the Poppy Factory in November.

Our thanks go to Peter Piggott for arranging this very interesting and informative day.

A little bit of history: The origins of the Poppy factory go back to 1922 when Major George Howson M.C (a Royal Engineer) who served on the Western Front in the First World War suggested that they make artificial Poppies so that troops returning home injured could be employed.

Branch Meeting Wednesday 16

Peter John Aldridge It is with great sorrow that we report the passing of Peter on

7^th November at the age of 80. Peter was a very active member at Branch meetings having run the monthly raffle with the help of his Wife Hazel for 29 years. (As reported in the October Newsletter)

Peter joined the branch within a month of its founding in March 1982.

He represented the Branch, proudly carrying the Standard for over 20 Years on numerous formal occasions. His Bearing and turnout was always excellent and the branch received countless comments and letters in appreciation of his work.

His efforts over the years earned him the award of two Group Director’s Commendations, the last in 1999, in recognition of his active, long sustained, outstanding work in support of the Association.

He joined the Royal Engineers 8/12/1948. on a 5 year term followed by 7 years reserve.

During his Army life he served at Tidworth, Chickerel, Gilbraltar Barracks Aldershot, and Ripon

from where in 1951 he moved to Berlin. Here he served with 24 Field Engineer Regiment.

During his Army Service Peter qualified as a Carpenter and Joiner. He was also an excellent runner taking part in many team events for the Corps. He returned home in 1953 when he left full time service. In civilian life he worked at The Esso refinery before joining British Rail

The funeral took place at Bournemouth North Cemetery this afternoon at 2 p.m.followed by interment. Bert Martin was due to parade our Standard.

Our message of sympathy go to Hazel and the family.

We wish him and any Members who are unwell at this time a speedy return to good heath.

Remembrance Sunday Parades.

The Branch was well represented around the district. A wreath was laid at Christchurch by

Allan Grover. At Poole, Jim Tongs paraded our Standard, Peter Piggott laid the Wreath and Bert Martin was the Parade Marshall..

Memorial Garden, Ferndown.

On Friday Remembrance day, a very well supported occasion took place at the recently completed Memorial Garden outside the R.B.L. Club, Church Road. After the 2 Minutes silence the garden was dedicated in memory of all who have fallen over the years.

11 Branch Members and Ladies were in attendance. The Committee expressed thanks, on behalf of all Branch Members to Jim Tongs who competently paraded the Branch Standard.

ENTERTAINMENT

Tonight we welcome Jacky Smith who will take us on tours of Alderney (Channel Islands)

and Washington U.S.A.

December Meeting is Christmas Party Night when we will welcome Wimborne Musical Theatre, who will entertain us with a selection of Christmas Songs and Songs from the Musicals. A special supper will be provided our wonderful catering Ladies led by Peggy

Branch Informal Lunches

The December Lunch is to be held at R.B.L Club Ferndown on December 6 at 12 Noon. This will be a Christmas Lunch at a cost of £8-50 Per Person. With a choice of Turkey or Beef, and Xmas Pudding. List on table tonight.

At the Gurkha Lunch held in October, 19 were present. Our thanks once again to the restaurant management for their generosity in providing complimentary Coffee, Tea and Ice cream. At the November lunch held at Ferndown British Legion Club14 were present.

Monthly Raffle.

This will now be organised by Peter Piggott on a temporary basis with

David and Jean Watts taking on the task of selling tickets until a more permanent answer can be arranged. You will note that the price of tickets will now be £1 per strip this is not a price rise but to sell fewer individual tickets. The odds of winning will stay exactly the same but it reduces the work in separating and folding tickets.

( to the great relief of the Secretary ).

Leslie Arthur Sparshott

All must be sad to read that Les died, in hospital, on 27th September 2011. His funeral service is at 1200hrs on Wednesday 19th October at Poole Crematorium ( the branch meeting day). Aged 96 he was our second oldest member.

He joined the TA in 1933 as a member of the Bournemouth based 3 Company of Hampshire Fortress RE. Mobilised at the outbreak of war, the unit soon became 578 Field Squadron RE. Les served with this unit throughout the war, first on the Isle of Wight, then later within 13 Corps Engineers of the 8th Army in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. The actions the unit took part in included El Alamein and Monte Cassino.

Discharged as a Sergeant in 1945, Les returned to work at his trade of electrician in Bournemouth. In the 1950s, with his wife, he went to Rhodesia and set up a successful electrical business. The death of his wife, together with the political situation in the now Zimbabwe, forced him to return to UK. after forty years. Living first with his sister in Bournemouth, he soon after moved to Wickham Court in Femdown, but in recent months had been at Streets Meadow in Wimborne.

Les joined the REA as a Life Member at Bournemouth in 2002 and was reunited with a number of his comrades in 578 Fd Sqn. He attended branch meetings at Boscombe and Femdown until his health made this difficult. Sadly he was the last of the members of his old unit in the Branch.

Ruby Wedding

Congratulations go to our Branch President, Geoff Smith, and his wife Susan, who recently celebrated their Ruby Wedding. May they enjoy many more happy years together.

Friend of the RE

Bill Marcouse has been invited by the Committee to become a 'Friend of the REA' , a formal category included in the Rules of the Association. Bill served in the RAOC, and is a member of the Canal Zoners. With his wife he has been present at our meetings on a regular basis for a considerable time.

Remembrance Services

The RBL Ferndown are arranging a short Service of Remembrance on Friday 11th November at their new Memorial Garden. The service will start at 10-45hrs and end shortly after the two minutes silence at

11-OOhrs. The Branch has been invited to send representatives.

On Sunday 13th November the Bournemouth Remembrance Service is at the War Memorial in Central Gardens at 1057hrs. Those parading should assemble at the NW end of Exeter Crescent by 1020hrs, ready to march off at 1040hrs. A wreath is to be laid on behalf of the Branch. Parking for those parading: disabled - Eden Glen; non-disabled - Winter Gardens or Bath Road N & S. These car parks will be free of charge from 0930 to 1300hrs.

The Annual Service of Remembrance and Dedication in Poole on Sunday 13th is at the War Memorial in Poole Park starting at 1050hrs. Those attending should assemble at the War Memorial by 1030hrs; having parked in spaces available opposite the Fountain in Poole Park or at the Civic Centre by 1020hrs. Bert Martin is the Mayor's Parade Marshal at this service. Jim Tongs has kindly volunteered to parade the Branch Standard at Poole, where Peter Piggott has agreed to lay the Branch wreath.

South West Group Events 2012

Monthly Raffle.

The Minutes of the Branch Meeting held in June 1982 reveal that Peter Aldridge volunteered to run a monthly raffle and this was approved by the members. Peter and Hazel have done this for well over 29 years but now think it time to step down. The Branch owes them great gratitude for their sustained efforts, up to 2005 the raffle income was vital to our finances, it is estimated that they raised around £9000 over the years, Well Done. Anyone interested in taking on the raffle should speak to Peter Piggott for more information .

BIRTHDAY of NOTE. Greetings go to Richard Silsby who celebrates his 70^th Birthday on the

6^th of October

Tom Rees. 23/10/1919 - 02/9/2011. The funeral of Tom Rees took place at Bournemouth crematorium on Wednesday 14/09/2011. Although Tom was not a Branch Member Bert Martin paraded the Branch Standard as requested by the family. Tom joined the Royal Engineers at the outbreak of War. He served for a total of 6 years. With the 8^th Army he was sent to North Africa where he was involved in the defence of Tobruk and was twice mentioned in despatches. He later served in Italy. Bert was thanked for bringing dignity, ceremony and pride to a final farewell

Tonight we welcome Mike Crankshaw who will tell us all about “Life on the Royal Yacht”.

In October we look forward to a visit from Mrs Warner and her presentation entitled

“Magistrates Court”.

COACH OUTING TO THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION POPPY FACTORY, RICHMOND

The Social Secretary has arranged a day out to the Poppy Factory on THURSDAY 17^th NOVEMBER. The cost will be £25-50 Per Head to include Lunch. This is a 2 course meal with a choice of either Fish and Chips, Cottage Pie with Vegetables or a Vegetarian option followed by Homemade Sweet and a cup of tea. We need to fill a 42 Seater Coach. Please support him. Wheelchairs are allowed but NON are available for hire. List on table tonight please enter your names.

The Time Table is: Ferndown British Legion Club Depart 9.15. (Car parking has been arranged with the Club) Arrive at the Poppy Factory in time for lunch, with a comfort break enroute. After lunch we enjoy a conducted tour of the factory. We Depart for our journey home at 4.30 Approx. If you cannot attend meetings, to book your place, please contact Peter Piggott.

The right hand photograph was taken by Bob Hucklesby in August of this year. Bob estimates that it is now approx 12 feet in height It is amazing the growth that has taken place in such a short time.

A word of thanks goes to Joan Herbert and also the Bournemouth Daily Echo for

publishing the notice regarding new members.This resulted in 6 new members joining our

association. It is important to keep our membership at its present level.

NEWSLETTER – AUGUST 2011. Branch Meeting Wednesday 17^Th

RAYMOND JARDINE.

It is with sadness, that we report the passing of Raymond (Ray) Jardine, at the age of 87,

after a long illness. Corporal Jardine was an Arnhem veteran and in1982 was a founder member of the R.E.A. Bournemouth and District Branch. He was a retired fire officer.

A celebration of Ray’s life was held at Bournemouth Crematorium on Thursday 11^thAugust. 4 Members were at the Service, and Bert Martin paraded the branch standard.

A guard of Honour was mounted by our Members and 8 Members of Ray’s other military association. We understand that Ray was landed at Arnhem in September 1944 and was captured by German troops, but managed to escape and returned to safety. A trumpeter sounded the last post. We extend our sympathy to his wife Phyll and all of his Family and Friends.

George Bubb has had a fall and is now recovering from a broken leg.

Norman Osborne is in Hospital recovering after Major Heart Surgery.

Best wishes go to them and any other member or lady who maybe unwell at this time.

COACH OUTING TO THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION POPPY FACTORY, RICHMOND.

The Social Secretary has arranged a day out to the Poppy Factory on THURSDAY 17^th NOVEMBER. The cost will be £25-50 Per Head to include Lunch. This is a 2 course meal with a choice of either Fish and Chips or Cottage Pie with Vegetables,followed by Homemade Sweet and a cup of tea. We need to fill a 42 Seater Coach. Please support him. Albert Hicks Memorial Award 2011.

Sapper Luke Walton, 3 Armed Squadron RE, 22 Engineer Regiment RE was chosen to receive this award for 2011. In Afghanistan in 2010 an IED search team, of which he was a member, came under fire. The Corporal leading the Team was seriously wounded.

Sapper Walton gave him First Aid. and arranged his evacuation. Sapper Walton’s prompt action saved the Corporal’s life. The award was presented at Perham Down on

Monday 18^th July. Our Chairman John Mason, attended. Sapper Walton is 21 years old and is an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) specialist.

R.E.A. SOUTH WEST GROUP.

At the B.B.Q. held on Sunday 31^st July the branch was represented by 10 Members and Ladies. The Albert Hicks Memorial Award (which is sponsored by Bournemouth branch) was available for all who attended to inspect.

CORPORAL JAMES BEDFORD.
Congratulations go to Cpl James Bedford on the occasion of his presentation by Prince Charles of the Military Cross, which was awarded to him for “Saving life whilst risking his own”,
(Quote according to the citation). Corporal Bedford was commanding a six man Royal Engineer
search team when they were fired upon and two of his men were injured. He sprinted across the
Battlefield in full view of the Taliban Gunmen to save his two comrades .He administered
“life saving First Aid” to the most seriously injured soldier, and directed others to help the
Second Casualty. This happened in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, on 10th June 2010.
He is based at the Royal School of Military Engineering in Chatham.

BICENTENARY OF THE CORPS OF ROYAL ENGINEERS AT CHATHAM AND SAPPER ALE.
The Corps propose marking the bicentenary of the Corps having a station at Chatham with a special
“SAPPER ALE” to be made by Shepherds Neame ( England’s Oldest Brewer) of Faversham Kent
Sapper Ale will be similar to Shepherd Neame’s “Spitfire Ale”. Likely cost is in the region of £20.00
for a pack of 12-- 500 ml bottles. The intention is to make it available for Christmas 2011.
Bournemouth Branch is making a bulk order, and is prepared to sell single bottles.
Your orders are needed as soon as possible--LIST on TABLE.

Geoff Smith has been in hospital for two weeks. It was good to see him at the Annual Lunch.
George Bubb has unfortunately had a fall and damaged his hip. He was sorry to have missed the Annual Lunch as he was looking forward to attending.

The Annual Lunch was held last Saturday at the Cumberland Hotel with 59 Members,
Ladies and guests in attendance. Our President Geoff Smith greeted all who attended as they entered the dining room. He then started the proceedings by saying prayers and reading Grace.
Our Chairman John Mason proposed the loyal toast and thanked Peter Piggott, ably assisted by Peggy, who arranged it all. Thanks to Susan Smith for making the floral sprays for the Ladies, and not forgetting the staff of the Cumberland Hotel and all the others who made our day most enjoyable.
The annual lunch for 2012 has been booked for 5th May. This was the only Saturday in May 2012 that the hotel was available to us

Beating the Retreat for 22 Engineer Regiment.
This took place at Swinton Barracks on Wednesday the 11th May. Our Chairman John Mason represented the Branch, accompanied by his wife Jane.

John reported back that he was most impressed by the whole event.

The Standard Bearers' Competition will be held at 22 Engr Regt, Swinton Barracks,
Perham, Down, Near Tidworth on Sunday 12th June. Details are as follows:

Local Non R.E.A. Event.
A letter has been received with details of Burton Armed Forces Day 2011.
This takes place on Sunday June 5th in Burton Christchurch. Taking part will be the Queens Gurkha Signal Regiment and the Royal Marines from Poole. (Subject to Commitments).
This is the fourth time that this event has been held. This year fund raising will be in aid of The Poppy Appeal and Help the Heroes. The parade will be followed by a service of celebration on the village green. To help the organizers to finalise seating etc please call Colin Jamieson Event Organiser on 01202 477929, tell them you would like to attend. More details from him will be available when the programme is finalised.

NEWS LETTER APRIL 2011

Branch Meeting Wednesday 20th April.

Welfare.
Bob Hucklesby has had a Cataract operation and is recovering well, and is looking forward to being able to drive again soon.
Margaret Hardiman Is still in Hospital. We wish her and all others who may be on the sick list, a return to health.
Les Sparshott has been visited in his new home and seems to be settling in quite well.

Birthdays of Note.
Greetings go to Allan Grover who will be 55 on the 16th May. He is our youngest Member. Belated greetings go to Morgan Benjamin who was 102 on 16th April and is our oldest member. Morgan’s family have asked if any member would like to visit him he will be pleased to see them.

Entertainment.
Tonight we welcome Major Susie Beeching with her presentation entitled
R.A.M.C. in Afghanistan.
The Speaker in May will be Mr. D Fones to explain the Origins of Words and Sayings.

Branch Annual Lunch. This will take place at the Cumberland Hotel on Saturday 14th May.
1200 for 1300 Hours. Cost £13 for Members and Ladies, £15.50 for guests.
Monies will be collected tonight. Please add names and menu choice to list on table tonight.
This will be the last time that booking can be made. If you are unable to attend meetings you can of course book places with menu choices by contacting Peter Piggott in the next few days.
Time is needed to make final seating arrangements and organise Menu etc. Remember that car parking at the Cumberland is limited but parking is allowed at the two adjacent Hotels, the Suncliffe and the Cliffside.

Branch Annual General Meeting.
The A.G.M.on the 16th March was well attended with 24 Members
13 Ladies present. Reports, covering the past year’s activities were received from the office bearers and the accounts for 2010 were accepted. The Chairman expressed his thanks to the outgoing Committee for their support and work. He also thanked the Ladies who prepare the buffets which are enjoyed at our meetings and also to Peter and Hazel Aldridge for the successful raffles they organise each month.
Our two fine Standard Bearers were also thanked for the work that they had done over the last year.
Our President Geoff Smith and his wife Susan presented flowers to Edie Osborne, Peggy Piggott,
Hazel Aldridge and Joan Herbert as a mark of appreciation for all of their hard work.
You will note from the information below that some alteration to the Committee has taken place. The changes are: John Mason Chairman. Phil Webster is Vice Chairman and Secretary,
Peter Piggott is Welfare and Social Member. All other posts stay as before except the welcome addition of Allan Grover who joins the committee as Assistant Secretary. He will be responsible for
recording and reading the minutes at meetings, also helping the secretary should the need arise.

After the meeting we were entertained by a few of our members who told us about their

experiences while serving in the Corps Some had brought along artefacts from their time in the Forces and told us all the history of them.
Afterwards Bert Martin demonstrated the drill movements that were involved in parading the standard, This was of great interest to members who had never seen the standard paraded. Our thanks to all who took part.
The proceeds of the raffle was £31. The committee agreed to round this up to £40 which was donated to ”Combat Stress” on behalf of Branch Members.

South West Group Annual General Meeting. Was held on Saturday the 9th April, at
22 Engineer Regt, Swinton Barracks, Pernham Down, near Tidworth. The Branch was represented by 4 Members and Mrs J. Mason

Informal Monthly Lunches.
There were 21 Members and ladies at the April lunch.

Tonight is the Annual General Meeting.
At this meeting the election of officers will take place and the branch accounts for 2010 will be presented. Three important posts need to be urgently filled, that of Secretary, Minutes Secretary and Social Secretary. Please put your name forward for these posts.

Combat Stress is a UK charity offering residential treatment to ex-servicemen and women suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other mental health issues. So do support this, Thank you.

Branch Annual Lunch.
This will take place at the Cumberland Hotel on Saturday May14th.

1200 for 1300 Hours. Cost £13 for Members and Ladies, £15.50 for guests.
Monies will be collected tonight and at the April meeting. Please add names and menu choice to list on table tonight. If you are unable to attend meetings you can of course book places with menu choices by contacting Peter Piggott.

Informal Monthly Lunches.
There were 26 members and ladies at the March lunch.

The April Lunch takes place at Ferndown British Legion Club on Tuesday April 5th.
The May Lunch takes place at the Poole Ex Servicemans Club, North Road, on Tuesday May 3rd.
The next Gurkha Lunch takes place on April 26th.
All of these events start at 12 Noon.

22 ENGINEER REGIMENTAL EVENTS

Lieut Col Kerr, CO 22 Engineer Regiment, is keen to invite Group members to Regimental events.
The first two events are:-

a. Op. HERRICK Welcome Back Party for 5 and 52 Armd Engr Sqns returning from Afghanistan.
This will take the form of a Regimental Open Day in Swinton Barracks starting at 14.00 hrs on Tuesday
29 March, and will include vehicle and equipment stands, live entertainment and refreshment stands.
The event is free and it would be good to welcome soldiers back from Afghanistan.

b. Beating Retreat - Retreat will be beat for 22 Engr Regt by the Corps Band at Swinton Barracks on Wednesday 11 May
If either of these Regimental events interest you please give your names, numbers, and vehicle details to the Secretary and details will be obtained.

Group Directors Commendation

Heartiest congratulations to Geoff Lord on being awarded a Group Directors Commendation

Branch Suppers

The June Branch Meeting was Deana Brown's last appearance as leader of the small band of ladies who prepare at home and serve supper at our meetings. She joined the band in 1998, at which time Cynthia Edwards was the leader. When Cynthia retired in 2000 Deana took on the job of Leader.

Thank you Deana for the wonderful variety of supper menus you devised and Deana was presented with gift vouchers and flowers at the meeting.

Geoff Smith has had some time in hospital but has now been discharged George Blubb is still in Wareham hospital.

The Rifles - Freedom Ceremony - Sunday 25th July -1.45 pm - Pier Approach, Bournemouth

The Rifles are to be given The Freedom of Bournemouth in a ceremony to be held at the Pier Approach, Bournemouth.

A section of the Pier Approach Area has been set aside for Ex-Service Veterans who are asked to be in their seats by 1.15 pm. At about 2.15 pm The Rifles will exercise their new Freedom. There is no reserved car parking and any reception is limited to The Rifles.

Peter Aldridge paraded the Branch Standard, and Bert Martin was Parade Marshall at this year's Parade.

Visit Chatham Historic Dockyard 2009 - Veterans Refund
After the Branch's visit to Chatham Historic Dockyard in June 2009, it was discovered that during Armed Forces Week 2009 entrance for Veterans was free! The Dockyard has now refunded the entrance fee of £8.50p for each of our Veterans who attended. Veterans who believe they are eligible please speak to Geoff Lord.

Annual Battle of Britain Commemoration Service 2010 - 70th Anniversary-Sunday 19th September

A letter has been received from the Royal Air Forces Association, Poole Branch giving advance notice that the above service which will be held at St. James Parish Church, Poole and inviting the Branch to be represented at same. There will be no parade as such. They would like other Ex-Service Associations to parade their Standards.

Branch Meeting Wednesday 20 January

Branch News

JAMES (JIM) KEANE. 1928-2010.

The sad news is that Jim Keane passed away on Thursday 7111 of January 2010. The Funeral will be held

at Poole Crematorium on Friday the 22nd of January at 10-30am. Jim joined the Branch in

November 1983 only 18 Months after the Branch was formed. In civilian life he was known as

"Jim the Plumber". Our condolences go to his Wife and Family at this time.

A donation has been sent in memory of Jim to Cancer Research UK. (Sorry no service history available).

Welfare.

At time of writing. Norman Osbome is in Hospital, awaiting treatment for Pneumonia

and Dorothy Poole has had a fall. Both are keen to return home as soon as possible. We wish them well..

Birthdays of Note.

Les Sparshott 95 on the 29th of January, Bill Chick 85 on the 2nd of February and

John Mason also 85 on the 14th of February. Our congratulations to them all.

Social.

The 55 Members Ladies and Guests who attended the Christmas Celebration enjoyed an evening with

entertainment from the "West Dorset Accordion Group", which was arranged by Social Secretary Peter.

Thanks to the Ladies who were responsible for the superb Buffet, with special mention to Deana, Peggy

and Joan. It was Peggy who made the wonderful cake.

Our thanks must go to: Cecilia Napier for her generosity for paying for the drinks on Xmas party night,

in honour of her late Husband Choke, also to Tony Edwards for his excellent portrayal of Santa Claus.

The entertainment tonight is "Dorset Coast - Christchurch to Swanage" by John Coombs. In February we

look forward to a presentation from Rob Curtis entitled "Inn Signs of Dorset".

35 Members and Ladies attended the January informal lunch at Poole Ex-Service Men's Club.The next

Lunch is to be held on Tuesday the 2nd of February at Femdown R.B.L.Club .This meal a two course

roast with a choice of both main meal and sweet, the cost is £7.

Don't forget the Ghurkha Lunch on Tuesday the 26th of this Month. Please add names to the lists for

both of these events, which are on the table tonight. If later for any reason you are unable to attend, after

adding names to list please call Peter Piggott. This is great help to the Caterers.

The A.G.M is in March and with Peter Piggott standing down from Social Secretary we

need to find a replacement. Also the Committee is in need of volunteers as there are two

places that must be filled if the branch is to be run as efficiently as of now. So if you can help

please will you contact any branch committee member.

It has been suggested that we could bring any form of memorabilia from our service life

and talk about it, after the business section of the A.G.M. Please support this as it has the

potential of being an interesting project.

A SPECIAL THOUGHT.

Please take time to think about the Sappers killed and injured in 2009

These include; Spr. Matthew Weston, badly injured and is now a triple amputee,
Spr.David Watson who lost his life on New Years Eve
both serving with 33 Engineer regiment in Afghanistan.

We do not hear enough about the injured service personnel returning from war zones, as

many as 70 in one month being admitted to The Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, at Selly

Oak Hospital, Birmingham.

Members are reminded that at the 2009 Annual General Meeting nobody came forward for election as Branch Secretary, neither has any person come forward subsequently - consequently in accordance with protocol the duties of Branch Secretary fell upon the Chairman for 2009/2010.

Please note also that Peter Piggott has decided not to stand for further election as Social Member, but is willing to continue as Welfare Member.

Members are invited to note that those 2 posts apart the outgoing Officers and Committee are willing to stand for further election.

The Poole Community Champion Award, in recognition of his hard work for being Parade Marshal for the Borough. This is given to a local resident who has made an outstanding contribution to the local community. The Award consists of a lapel badge and a certificate. Well done Bert.

Tonight’s Entertainment.

Tonight we welcome the return of John Combes with his Presentation entitled SWANAGE to PORTLAND. On his last visit John took us from CHRISTCHURCH to SWANAGE.

March is the Annual General Meeting.
At this meeting the election of officers will take place.

Three important posts need to be urgently filled, that of Secretary, Minutes Secretary and Social Secretary.
Please put your name forward for these posts. This is important if the branch is to run as smoothly as at present. Any other business you wish to be discussed, please let Chairman John Mason know in advance.
After the A.G.M. if any member has any items of interest from their service days and would be prepared to tell us about them (Lasting about 10 minutes). Please bring them along. Contact Peter Piggott who has agreed to arrange the programme.

Branch Annual Lunch.

This will take place at the Cumberland Hotel on Saturday the 14th of May.

1200 for 1300 Hours. Cost £13 for Members and Ladies, £15.50 for guests.

The New Forest Normandy Veterans.

Have arranged an outing by coach to Normandy to take part in the commemorations of the D-Day Landings and the Battle of Normandy from 4th to 7th June by ferry Portsmouth, local pick up. There is a full programme each day. Accommodation in Hotel, Bayeux, full board. There are vacancies. No need to be ex Service. Cost £395 twin, £495 single (deposit £100).

RANVILLE CHURCH ROOF APPEAL

When 6th Airborne Division was inserted into Normandy on night 5th /6th June 1944 Ranville Parish Church effectively became a Regimental Chapel of The Parachute Regiment, and all Airborne Forces.

The People of Ranville took our fallen and laid them gently to rest in the churchyard.

Then from the First Normandy Pilgrimage in 1946 onwards a Special Airborne Mass has been said in the church each year on 6th June, and successive Parish Priests, as they have been appointed, have been inducted as Parachute Regiment Padres

and appropriately kitted out.

However in 2009 – D + 65 years the church was closed for public worship due to an unsafe roof, and the special mass had to be said in a marquee. The roof had not been repaired by 6th June 2010 and again the special mass had to be said in a marquee.

The likely cost of repairing the roof is 160,000 euros.

By June 2010 Ranville had raised 40,000 euros towards same.

I have just been advised that authority was given to start the repairs in October last. It is to be hoped that the repairs

will be completed by the end of May 2011 but then there will still be a considerable amount of funding to be raised to pay off the outstanding debt.

May I suggest that it would be greatly appreciated by the People of Ranville if ALL members of Airborne Forces, Past and Present, were each to make a token contribution of say £1, towards the cost of the repairs to the Roof of Ranville Parish Church.

Such a token donation by all could be expected to raise in the region of £40,000 – a worthy and not insignificant gesture.

Also you may care to note that the

Conseil General (County Council) will donate 1 Euro for each Euro donated

Branch News

Birthdays of Note. Congratulations go to John Delaney who will be 60 on the 16th of December
and to Bob Hucklesby who will be 90 on the 3rd of January.

Welfare.
George Bubb is back in his own home, and is being looked after by Wynn his wife. He is now able to get around the house with the help of a Zimmer frame. This is a vast improvement to being reliant on a wheelchair. It is hoped that some home care arrangement can soon be in place.

Events.

Tonight is our Christmas Party Night, with a special buffet laid on by our wonderful catering ladies, led by Peggy (Who celebrates her Birthday Today).
A big round of applause to them for the marvellous work that they do all year round.
Tonight's entertainment is provided by Alan Chitty and is entitled Magic.

Christmas Lunch held at Femdown on December the 7th was a great success with 42 members and ladies in attendance. Our thanks go to all the catering staff at the club for all their hard work, in producing an excellent meal.

January Lunch.
This takes place at North Road Club on the 4th of the month.

The next Gurkha lunch will be held on the 25th of January. Both events start at 12 noon. Please enter names on lists which are on the table tonight. If you need to cancel please let Peter Piggott know.

January Meeting.

At the meeting on January 19th we welcome back Jacky Smith who continues her journey on
Route 66 in the U.S.A

Tony Meates.
The funeral of Tony took place took place on Friday the 19th of November at

St. Mary s Church, Swanage, followed by a short family service at Poole Crematorium
4 members and 2 ladies where amongst the congregation. Bert Martin paraded our Standard with one other from the British Legion, where Tony was an active member.
A card has been received from Rosemary Bliss ( Gwen Meates's Sister) on behalf of Gwen
thanking the members and ladies who attended Tony's funeral, and also to record her appreciation for the cards and messages of sympathy she has received. Gwen is getting help from her family after the sudden loss of Tony, and hopes to still come to our Gurkha lunches.

Our thanks go to our Chairman John Mason and his Wife Jane, for the wine and cake they

provided to mark the occasion of their marriage in November. We wish them all the best in their
new life together.

National Standard Bearers Competition

The results of this competition have been published in the December edition of The Sapper

Magazine results show that Kevin Rattenbury the South West Group representative was
awarded 2 place.

2011 Branch Subsciptions.

Members are reminded that their Annual Subsciptions are due on 1st of January. Please let the
treasurer Cjeort Lord have payment as soon as possible. The cost is held at £4 00
This fee has remained the same since 2001, so you must agree that it is good value for money.

Some information to our members who travel to the continent of Europe.
Your European Health Insurance Card,(EHIC) was first issued over 5 years ago and may now need renewal You will not receive any notice of this, so it is suggested that you check the card, and renew if required.

The Corps weekend to be held on 13th to the 15th May 2011 will this year be held at Chilwell and Not at Kipon as in previous years.

Branch News.

Sadly Mrs Cynthia Edwards, Wife of our Vice President Tony, passed away on the 31st October,
Aged 84. Cynthia was bom in Southampton. She and Tony were married for 62 years. They had 3 Children, two Daughters and one Son. She was an ardent supporter of the Association, attending both Branch and District functions, also helping Tony with his various branch posts. Cynthia was also involved in the catering for our branch suppers for many years. The funeral took place on Monday the 15th of November at St. John's Church Broadstone, followed by a burial at Corfe Mullen. Tony and Cynthia met in Egypt where he had been posted and she was serving in the A.T.S. They served together at many locations in the following years.
We extend our condolences to Tony and his family at this sad time.

TONY MEATES
Sadly another recent death has been announced, that of Tony Meates who passed away suddenly from a

heart attack on Saturday the 6th of November, aged 82. This was the day after celebrating his 61st wedding
anniversary. Tony served a full term in the Corps, and retired in 1970 with the rank of W01. During
his career he was a Trade Instructor at Chepstow. He joined the Bournemouth R.E.A. Branch in 1994.
Tony leaves his wife Gwen, and family of 2 Sons and 1 Daughter. The funeral is to be held on Friday
19th of November at St. Mary's Church, Swanage,at 2.30 p.m. We extend our sympathy to Gwen and
all the family at this sad time.

Congratulations:
Go to our Chairman / Secretary John Mason on his wedding to Janet Wilby, which took place at The Emmanuel Church, Billericay, Essex, on the 6th of November. We look forward to meeting and welcoming Janet to our meeting tonight.

Tonight we welcome Lt. Col. Malcolm Torrent with his presentation entitled "Music on Horseback".

The December 15th meeting will be Xmas Party Night.
The entertainment will be provided by Alan Chitty presenting "Magic"

Remembrance Day Parades
The branch was well represented at parades held locally. Peter Aldridge paraded our Standard at Bournemouth where a branch wreath was laid by GeoffLord our Treasurer. In Poole our wreath was laid by Welfare Member, Peter Piggott and Bert Martin one of our Standard Bearers, was Parade Marshal.

Welfare

George Bubb is still in Wareham Hospital awaiting placement into a care home, and Peggy Friberg is doing well after having a complete knee replacement.

Informal lunch- Tuesday 7th December-12 Noon.

This Lunch will be held at Femdown R.B.L. Club and is a 2 course Christmas Lunch, at a cost of £8 per head. Please sign list on table if you plan to attend, and if you find you need to cancel please ring Peter Piggott. A draw will be arranged to give a tip to the catering staff at the club, This is to mark the first anniversary of our lunches there.
The informal lunches still stay popular. There where 19 Members, Ladies and Friends attending
the Gurkha Restaurant, and 23 at the Ex-Service Men's Club in Poole...

Deana Brown has been accepted as an Associate Member of the R.E.A. Having recently stood

down from organising food for our excellent branch suppers.

Bournemouth have not issued as yet, the programme for this years ceremonies. It is understood, However that they will be held at the War Memorial in Central Gardens as in previous years.

Branch Meeting Wednesday 19th January
Bob Hucklesby invites you all to a FREE first drink to celebrate his 90th Birthday which was on the 3rd of January.

Welfare.

Ruth Barden has been in to Hospital to have eye surgery and is doing well.

David Watts has been in Hospital but now is at home after being given the all clear.

George Bubb continues to improve and is now able to go into Wareham on his Mobility Scooter.

Best wishes are sent to any Member and Lady who have been unwell.

Les Sparshott has been contacted. Contact was lost some weeks ago but Peter our Welfare Member found him at his new home in Wimborne, where he is staying before deciding on a permanent move.

Congratulations go to Geoff Lord
For being awarded the Group Directors Commendation. This was presented to him by our President Geoff Smith at the meeting held on the 15th of December.

He is making a first class job of keeping the branch accounts in good order, which is a time consuming job and has been doing this task since 2004. Thank you Geoff.

February meeting.

At this meeting, the entertainment will be provided by John Coombs and is entitled ‘Swanage to Portland’.

January Monthly Lunch.

22 Members and Ladies attended this event at the North Road Club. Our thanks go to the caterers for the supply of a good choice of food and for their prompt service.

The next Gurkha lunch

Will be held on Tuesday the 25^th of January.

February Lunch.

This will take place at Ferndown Royal British Legion Club on the 1st of the month.

Both events start at 12 Noon. Please enter names on the lists which are on the table tonight. If you need to cancel please let Peter Piggott know.

Notes for your March Diary

The lunch will be held at the North Road Club on the 1st of the month.

The A.G.M. will be held on Wednesday the 16th of March.

At this meeting the election of the Committee will take place and there are two posts that need to be filled urgently. 1) Secretary. John Mason (Our Chairman) has been carrying out this task on a temporary basis over the last two years and a replacement is urgently needed. 2) Social Secretary, Peter Piggott stood down from this post at the 2010 A.G.M. after doing the job for many years.
The entertainment during the last 12months was organised by Peter before standing down. Replacements for these two important posts are urgently needed. Please put your name forward.

2011 Branch Subscriptions.

Members are reminded that their Annual Subscriptions were due on 1st of January. Please let the treasurer Geoff Lord have payment as soon as possible. The cost is held at £4.00. This fee has remained the same since 2001, so you must agree that it is good value for money.

A Notice of Thanks must go to Ted Young, for his generous donation of 100 First Class postage stamps which is a great help in keeping the cost of the Newsletter distribution down. Also to the members who have sent stamped addressed envelopes--not forgetting those who kindly added donations to their Annual Subscriptions. Thank you all once again.

Branch Annual Lunch.

This will take place on Saturday the 14th of May at the Cumberland Hotel Bournemouth. The cost will be the same as last year:-£13 for Members and Ladies and £15.50 for Guests. The Menu will be published in Newsletter for February. Choice of Menu and payment will be collected in March.
