THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION BURLEY BRANCH
The Burley Branch takes pleasure in presenting this concert and greatly appreciates the support given not only by the people of Burley, by their attendance here today, but also to the sponsors listed below, who have so generously given the financial support needed to stage this event:

The Ministry of Defence - The Burley Village Magazine - The Magpies Nest - Titan Leathercraft
The Coven of Witches - John Willies Country Kitchens – Shappen Stores – The Cider Pantry
MacPennys - Forest Leisure Cycling - Hermitage Beauty – Spencers – The Burley Inn
Burley Fudge Shop – Dawson Engineering - Mr & Mrs Hayden - Burley Stores – The White Buck

The Burley Branch is one of the oldest branches in the Legion, being formed in 1921, the same year that the then British Legion, later to become the Royal British Legion, was founded. Our branch has had the highest membership of any branch by percentage of population and has won awards at national level for the contributions it makes to Legion funds but we urgently need more members to maintain those achievements. We are a fund - raising rather than a social branch and need your help to continue in our efforts to raise the £1.6 million spent each week by the Royal British Legion in support of ex-servicemen and women and their bereaved families. Our nation’s involvement in conflicts in the Falklands, the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan has resulted in growing numbers requiring our help now, and well into the future. Anyone can join the Royal British Legion whether or not they have a connection with the Armed Forces, so please join us. Our membership secretary will be pleased to talk to you. Telephone 01425 404077

THE RINGWOOD AND BURLEY BAND

We are most fortunate to have the Ringwood and Burley Band, under their Director of Music,
Lloyd Rayner  BA Hons (Music), to play for this concert.  The Ringwood Band has been in existence since it was founded in 1879.  The Burley Band started at a later date and continued until 1970 when the two bands were amalgamated to form the present, prestigious concert band.

THE DOLPHIN MARCHING BAND

The Dolphin Marching Band was formed by their Bandmaster, Chris Godber in 1996. It is a
charitable youth band with 23 members ranging in age from 9 to 18 and is based in Poole, Dorset.

SEATING
Reserved seating is to be provided for all those entering with a Numbered Sponsors Programme. Those spectators without a Numbered Sponsors Programme wishing to bring their own picnic tables and chairs or rugs are encouraged to do so.

The origins of the ceremony of Beating Retreat:

Originally it was known as “Setting the Watch” and initiated by firing a single round from the “Evening” gun. It was used to recall troops to be within the castle walls. In the 17th Century the gun was replaced by the beating of drums as a signal to return to quarters. Now it is performed as a ceremony to display marching and musical prowess.

My name is Stan Rawcliffe and I am the Chairman of the Blackpool Branch REA. I was very pleased to hear that my Grandson , L/Cpl Gary Rawcliffe RE, had been presented with an Award from the Bournemouth Branch, for the," Soldier of the Year"
It was a very pleasant surprise for both  him and his Family. We are very proud of him. Could I express everyone's  thanks, to your Branch for this great Honour. Also would it be possible to E-Mail me any photos you may have of the event, so that we can put it in our Local Paper.
Gary is a third Generation Sapper and he has two other serving Brothers, who unfortunately did not join the REs, and are in  REME.( But they have been forgiven) Please pass on our best wishes,to your Branch from the Blackpool REA. And thank you again for the Presentation.
    With Best Regards
